Chapter Seventeen

Shandra stood in front of a large older house in Warner. The sign out front said Dr. Murphy’s, hours were 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday- Friday. He or she was obviously a doctor that worked limited hours.

Entering the door with the Open sign, Shandra was surprised by the entryway. It had three chairs, a small area with toys, and a split door, with the top half open, into a room to the right.

“Good morning.” A young male receptionist stepped up to the split door. “We don’t take calls from pharmaceutical reps any day but Tuesday.”

“I’m not a pharmaceutical rep.” Shandra faced the young man.

“We don’t take new patients on any day but Thursday.” He pointed to a sign on the wall beside the doorway.

“I’m not here as a patient. I’d like to speak to the doctor about patients, Jayden and Mia Woodcock. My husband and I are fostering them until things are settled.”

The young man tipped his head. “They finally took the children away from Jessica?”

“No, Jessica and Mitch are dead. Why would they take the children away?” Shandra wondered at this receptionist knowing something that Children’s Services should have known.

An older woman walked out of a room down the hall. She smiled at Shandra and waved at the receptionist. “See you next week.”

When the woman had closed the door behind her, the receptionist opened the bottom half of the door and walked down the hall, knocking on the door the older woman had appeared from.

He opened the door, spoke briefly, and waved Shandra toward him. “Dr. Murphy will see you. She has fifteen minutes before her next patient.”

Shandra walked in the room, expecting to see an older woman. What she discovered was a woman with short, spiky hair, dyed rainbow colors with large glittery glasses. She looked like a rocker from the 80s in a white doctor’s coat.

“Gil says you have the Woodcock children. Do you live in Warner?” The woman was abrupt.

Shandra held her hand out to the doctor. “I’m Shandra Greer. My husband and I are fostering the twins.”

The doctor shook hands and that’s when Shandra noticed the scarring on her hand and lower arm.

“We don’t live in Warner. My husband is a detective with the sheriff’s department.” Shandra sat in the chair in front of the woman’s desk.

“What do you want to know from me?”

“You are the children’s doctor, correct?” Shandra didn’t miss the hesitancy before the woman nodded.

“Yes. They don’t have any allergies, unusual this day and age, and considering their mother’s addictions.”

This was what Shandra wanted to know about. “Why did Jessica come see you almost once a week? Did you know she would keep the children up all night before so she could come see you and tell her husband she brought the children here?”

The doctor leaned back in her chair. “She was trying to kick her addiction. I counseled her and gave her medication for depression. That’s a usual side effect of quitting meth.”

“And her husband didn’t know this?” Shandra thought it odd a woman would keep her trying to get clean away from her husband.
